2. My double-chambered heart
The greatest thing that I probably found in college was the love of my life. I’m not talking about a life-partner here. What I found was the kind of work that made me thrive. I discovered art and community.
In college I found myself teaching workshops, classes, facilitating community discussions, and organizing community events. I rooted myself in organizations that educated students and community members about the histories of people of color, social movements, and radical struggle.
I also grew my art spirit by being a part of artistic communities — {M}aganda Magazine, Poetry for the People, and the Pilipino Cultural Night. I kept writing poetry, plays, and trying to bring art into my community. Art became entrenched in my life — or rather, I became entrenched in art.
By the time I graduated I had honed in on these two passions as the essential truths of my being. These spaces moved the river current of my revolutionary spirit. Art and community would not escape me for the rest of my life.

This Wednesday a panel that will feature writer and hip-hop head extroardinaire Jeff Chang and SF Chronicle writer Michael Cabanatuan, among others, will be held to discuss the role of blogs in community organizing and their potential to educate, empower, and activate people to action. Wicked.
This will be an interesting discussion as we witness today the massplosion of blogs and other New Media as effective tools for advocacy and organizing. Take note of the Obama election campaign, and the President-Elect’s tech-friendly approach to making his transition and administration accessible. We are only starting to witness the full extent to which these new social technologies and media can impact our lives and communities.

East Meets West: A Night of Hip Hop and Comedy at Space 180 SF blasted last night. I had the opportunity to perform with the amazing talent of comedians Aivy Cordova and Emmanuel Romero, super songstress Golda Supernova, and New York talents, comedian Kevin Nadal and emcee Hydroponiks. The event’s proceeds went to the CANfit program, which aims to improve nutrition and health among Bay Area youth.
The crowd was warm and full of love and the sets provided a cool variety of comedy, poetry, and hip hop. Visiting New York comedian Kevin Nadal and emcee Hydroponiks most definitely rocked the stage and brought it for the East Coast.
These artists’ work speaks for itself so check out their websites for future appearances and performances!
Thanks all for a great event!
