April is National Poetry Writing Month. Read up on it and find info about local events for the month at poets.org.
In case you didn’t catch the upsurge of numbered poetry on this blog — part of NaPoWriMo is a challenge to write 30 poems in 30 days for the month of April.
I’m stretching the challenge a little by writing multiple poems some days since I tend to be moving around a lot. But I am holding myself to this challenge!
Maybe that’s the point is finding the poetry everywhere you are, no matter what you’re doing …

Stumbled upon the wickedest script-writing challenge of all time, Script Frenzy. Write 100 pages in 30 days during the month of April, for the sheer brilliance of the task and to indulge your creative spirit! I am totally doing this. All you awesome writers out there should too! The website also has a bunch of resources for writers and a plot-generator!
Script Frenzy is an international writing event in which participants take on the challenge of writing 100 pages of scripted material in the month of April. As part of a donation-funded nonprofit, Script Frenzy charges no fee to participate; there are also no valuable prizes awarded or “best” scripts singled out. Every writer who completes the goal of 100 pages is victorious and awe-inspiring and will receive a handsome Script Frenzy Winner’s Certificate and web icon proclaiming this fact.
Even those who fall short of the word goal will be applauded for making a heroic attempt. Really, you have nothing to lose—except that nagging feeling that there’s a script inside you that may never get out.
Who: You and everyone you know. No experience required.
What: 100 pages of original scripted material in 30 days. (Screenplays, stage plays, TV shows, short films, and graphic novels are all welcome.)
When: April 1 – 30. Every year. Mark your calendars.
Where: Online and in person (if you want!). Hang out in the forums, join your fellow participants at write-ins, and make friends by adding writing buddies online.
Why: Because you have a story to tell. Because you want a creative challenge. Because you’ll be disappointed if you missed out on the adventure. Because you need to make time for you.
How: Sign up. Tell everyone that you are in the Frenzy. Clear your calendar. (US participants: Get your taxes done now!) Start some wrist exercises. Have fun!
More info on the Script Frenzy website. Get on it! Only two weeks left to sign up and prepare yourself for a month of furious writing!

Now in its fourth year, Poetry After the Storm has brought poets and performers together to raise awareness of the ongoing struggle of communities in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and to raise funds to directly benefit relief efforts in the Gulf Coast.
I have performed at the event twice before, and have seen reknowned artists Proletariat Bronze, former California Poet Laureate Al Young, and Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Kim Nalley contribute their talents to the event.
The night will shake you.

The Pilipino American Alliance has been serving students and building community at UC Berkeley since its inception during the the Ethnic Studies strikes of 1969. The organization has brought students together through the Marcos regime, three EDSA revolutions, both the fall and rise of the International Hotel in San Francisco, the fight for veteran’s equity, and thirty-two years of Pilipino Cultural Nights.
Come celebrate with students, alumni, and community members through a night of entertainment, Filipino food, and probably all the right amounts of tinikling stick banging and cha-chas. I will also read a poem about lumpia or adobo or something …

The 40th Anniversary of twLF at UCB March 5, 2009

In January of 1969 students at UC Berkeley came together and established the third world Liberation Front to organize a protest that would become the longest protest in campus history. Campus faculty and local labor unions joined the students in the strike to establish a Third World College at UC Berkeley.
The strike prompted then-Governor of California Ronald Reagan to declare a state of emergency on the campus and send the National Guard to campus to suppress the protests. After three months of violent confrontation and the arrests of 150 students, the strike failed at establishing a Third World College but successfully won the creation of the Department of Ethnic Studies on campus.
This week students at Berkeley are holding numerous events to commemorate the 40th anniversary of twLF. I will be reading and performing at a few of these events (I’ll post the details on those separately).
They are just chocked-full of community, art, and love so please check’em out!
Full schedule of events after the jump.
