In the shadow of the monster: life in the wake of the money-value March 31, 2009

onlypaper[from Lois Stavsky]

When I was a sophomore in high school, I heard the advice of my journalism teacher to one of my graduating friends trying to figure out how to pay for college: “Go to the college you want to go to. Money will come. If you are doing what you like, money will always find its way.”

The advice made so much sense to me, at that moment I decided that I would not allow money to be lord over my life, shaping and manipulating the choices I make, the person I become. I valued other things, much more real to me at the time and easier to believe in — like people, history, and changing the world. I intended to live a life dictated not by money but by me. How young and foolish I was.

Now, I am working full-time since last November. I’ve been working since my second year in college but this job is my first full-time gig since graduation. Working certainly changes the way one thinks about money. Entering the money-making and money-using world, I have found that there is no way to escape the green monster’s hands as I had once hoped, short of becoming a hermit in the Appalachians. This is a capitalist society and we are bound to that reality by certain necessities. (more…)

This is how I do books March 30, 2009

I never considered myself much of a reader. In high school I read only a few things I can probably count on both hands that weren’t required reading.

In college I never read leisurely. College basically put a stop to leisurely anything. I also believed I was a slow reader so I never felt that I could commit to finishing a novel.

Now how is that in the last month I have found myself reading up to three books at the same time! I suppose I have the patience for it. Having a commute that includes a BART ride also helps. (more…)

Financial stability is not very interesting nor ultimately very useful.

Sometimes words come together in my head in interesting ways.

i am totally alive right now. and you are too. i am here and you are there and we are both alive together! like really. think about it.

Sitting at my desk at work I thought of this exercise. I stopped everything I was doing and wrote. I will do this again.  If I ever doubt how rich and flesh and living and breathing my life is, I am determined to shake myself back to love.

At this moment …

Someone is at lunch and about to tell their best friend that they are gay. Someone wonders if he is really falling in love with this girl right in front of him. Someone is thinking about whether she will really hurt anyone else by killing herself. Someone is feeling the soft of his own baby son in his arms for the first time. Someone is trying on a new religion. Someone is giving up an old religion. Someone is giving up everything to cross an ocean for their children. Someone is trying to make a quiet kid who sits alone in the playground laugh. Someone is about to fall asleep for the last time. Someone is cleaning a gravestone tossing the old flowers to the side and putting here a new bouquet. Someone is receiving their first kiss. Someone is being told that they won’t ever amount to anything. Someone is deciding they will prove them all wrong. Someone is writing a poem. Someone is thinking of you and smiling.

I saw this strong woman still shouting her lungs out and stompin’ her feet on the streets of San Francisco a few years back. Sugar Pie Desanto, the Brooklyn-born and SF Fillmore-raised Filipina has had a long and inspiring career as a singer and artist. The Hyphen Blog is featuring profiles of Asian American Women all throughout this month in honor of Women’s History month and Sugar Pie is their most recent feature. Know this woman.

She’s a singer — not merely someone who sings, but a singer throughout life, someone who has never abandoned performance despite her lack of the kind of superstardom that most people consider the only measure of success. She’s a great role model for artists of all kinds, who must learn to quickly put away ideas of superheated stardom and acclimate quickly (especially in this economy) to aspire to master your art form, the ability to make a living at what you love, and the love and respect of your peers and fans.
